The Elves and The Shoemaker Posted: June 16th, 2008 @ 11:56am
Remember the story about the elves that came when nobody was around and helped the shoemaker finish his work? Well, if you’ve been at the church and happened to see a short, grey-haired guy up on a stepladder with a toothbrush and a can of smelly stuff.....that is Dean Hanson with his special solvents and a little brass brush cleaning six bricks at a time in the sanctuary. All these years the brick hasn’t looked too bad...until we took down some walls, put up new lights, tiled the floor and painted the walls. Thanks to Dean’s patient work the brick will eventually be nearly as good as new.
Do you think that God sends the rain and that’s all it takes to make our church gardens grow? Well, the taller grey-haired guy prowling around the church early in the mornings with a weeder or hose, or a new plant here or there, or a squirter full of Miracle-Grow.....that’s David Knighton.
Ever wonder how the edges of the church property get mowed, or what happened to the four trees in the church woods that came down in the “monsoon” last Tuesday, or how the left-over pew pieces got up to the church garage, or who fills in for Henry when he’s away, or how the Sunday morning coffee gets into the pots, or what happens to the cups after the Sunday Socials or to the dishes after the Sunday suppers......almost every week all year long....that’s Tom Steffen.
Or have you seen a handsome young blond guy tip-toeing up to pour a hot pot of coffee into one of the coffee holders and then hurrying back to the kitchen to start another fresh pot, or helping to clear and load coffee cups into the dishwasher and help with the Sunday Social cleanup and who understands and knows what all of the buttons on the dishwasher are for?......well, that’s Austin Buttle.
Thank goodness there are so many un-sung “elves” around our church.
